How has change impacted Madrid?
Madrid has adapted well to today's changing economy and is currently the economic and industrial centre of Spain, the major financial centre of southern Europe and has the third largest GDP in the European Union. Also, with current global issues such as global warming, Madrid has acted fast and effectively. Many streets and zones of Madrid are adorned with trees, green areas, squares filled with flowers and wonderful parks, making it a not only beautiful city but a green one as well. It is estimated that there are around 300,000 aligned trees in Madrid, which is the second highest in the world, after Tokyo. Whereas many countries and cities are eliminating green areas to make room for development, Madrid is doing the reverse, creating more parks and planting more trees in zones that are not being used. It was estimated that throughout the past twelve years, green areas in the city area of Madrid have increased as much as 16%.
In the last few decades, feminism has become even more important to modern societies. Madrid is generally very accepting of feminism and currently has a female mayor: Ana Botella. Many Madrileños are very supportive of feminism and recently, a group of women went and put up signs outside a famous clothes store. The writing on the signs roughly translated to 'Beauty is on the outside'. An image of this is shown above.
Even though Madrid is a historically rich city with many old buildings demonstrating older styles of architecture, Madrid is also filled with many contemporary buildings, with innovatively designed features. For example, the building below.
